Evaluation of Seismic Activities for June 2026

1 Major Seismic Activities

* On June 8, an earthquake with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.7 occurred in Mindanao, the Philippines. The earthquake triggered a tsunami that was recorded along the Pacific coast from the Kanto region to Okinawa Prefecture, as well as in the Izu and Ogasawara Islands. At Chichijimahutami observation point, a 17 cm tsunami was recorded (provisional results).

* On June 16, a magnitude (M) 5.5 earthquake occurred in southern Ibaraki Prefecture. The quake recorded a maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower in Gunma and Saitama Prefectures. It caused damage and injuries.

* On June 25, an M7.2 earthquake occurred offshore of Iwate Prefecture. It recorded a maximum seismic intensity 6 Upper in Aomori Prefecture. It caused damage and injuries. Furthermore, a long-period ground motion of class 2 was recorded from Hokkaido to the Tohoku region.
The event triggered a tsunami, which recorded 0.1 m (preliminary results) at the Kuji Port observation point (Port and Harbor Bureau) in Iwate Prefecture.
Furthermore, on June 28, an M6.1 earthquake occurred, with a maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower in Aomori and Iwate prefectures.

* On June 26, an M5.6 earthquake occurred in eastern Yamanashi Prefecture and the Fuji Five Lakes. The earthquake recorded a maximum seismic intensity 6 Lower in Yamanashi Prefecture. It caused damage and injuries.

2 Seismic Activities by Region

(1) Hokkaido Region

There was no remarkable activity.

(2) Tohoku Region

* For the information about the M7.2 earthquake offshore of Iwate Prefecture on June 25, please refer to "Evaluation of Earthquake Offshore of Iwate Prefecture on June 25, 2026."

(3) Kanto-Chubu Region

* On June 1, an M6.0 earthquake occurred in the ocean near Torishima Island at a depth of approximately 20 km (based on CMT solutions). Its focal mechanism was a reverse fault type with a pressure axis oriented in the E-W direction.

* On June 16, an M5.5 earthquake occurred in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of approximately 50 km. Its focal mechanism was a reverse fault type with a pressure axis oriented in the NW-SE direction. The earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the continental plate.
GNSS observations revealed no remarkable crustal deformation related to this earthquake.

* On June 26, an M5.8 earthquake occurred in northeastern Chiba Prefecture at a depth of approximately 55 km. Its focal mechanism was a reverse fault type with a pressure axis oriented in the E-W direction. The earthquake occurred at the boundary between the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate.

(4) Kinki-Chugoku-Shikoku Region

There was no remarkable activity.

(5) Kyushu-Okinawa Region

There was no remarkable activity.

(6) Around the Nankai Trough

* There have been no unusual changes that would suggest that the likelihood of a great earthquake occurring along the Nankai Trough has increased compared to the normal background level.

(7) Other Regions

* On June 8, an earthquake with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.7 occurred in Mindanao, the Philippines. The focal mechanism was a reverse fault type with a pressure axis oriented in the E-W direction. The earthquake triggered a tsunami that was recorded along the Pacific coast from the Kanto region to Okinawa Prefecture, as well as in the Izu Islands and Chichijima Island. At Chichijimahutami observation point, a 17 cm tsunami was recorded (provisional results).

2 Nationwide Seismic Activities by Region

(1) Hokkaido Region

There is no supplementary information for Hokkaido region.

(2) Tohoku Region

There is no supplementary information for Tohoku region.

(3) Kanto-Chubu Region

– GNSS observations suggest that crustal deformation in the area stretching from western Shizuoka to eastern Aichi Prefectures differs from the normal trend, a phenomenon that has been observed since early 2022. It is believed that this change is the result of long-term slow slip occurring deep within the boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the continental plate, extending from the Atsumi Peninsula to Lake Hamana. The slip center is gradually shifting from the Atsumi Peninsula towards the eastern side of Lake Hamana.

(4) Kinki-Chugoku-Shikoku Region

– From June 7 to June 23, deep low-frequency earthquakes (tremor activity) were recorded near the boundary between the Philippine Sea Plate and the continental plate in central Shikoku. Strain and tilt data suggest that the slight crustal deformations recorded in the area were almost synchronized with the deep low-frequency earthquakes (tremors). It is believed that this phenomenon resulted from a short-term slow slip event occurring deep within the boundary between the two plates.

– Since approximately mid-2025, there has been a notable increase in clusters of tremor activity occurring at depths ranging from 5 to 20 km within the Earth's crust in northern Yamaguchi Prefecture. The largest earthquake of this series was an M3.1 event (maximum seismic intensity 1) which occurred on June 16.
Since February 2025, clusters of tremors have been occurring continuously at depths of approximately 25 to 30 km in the lower crust around this area. This series of tremors has been accompanied by slight crustal deformation.

(5) Kyushu-Okinawa Region

There is no supplementary information for the Kyushu-Okinawa region.

(6) Around the Nankai Trough

– "There have been no unusual changes that would suggest that the likelihood of a great earthquake occurring along the Nankai Trough has increased compared to the normal background level.":
