Earthquake Offshore Miyagi Prefecture on July 6

On July 6, 2022 at 05:10 (JST), there was an M5.4 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 4) at a depth of 63 km, offshore Miyagi prefecture. The focal mechanism (CMT solution) showed a reverse fault type with a compression axis in an NW-SE direction.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area b), before the occurrence of "the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake" (hereafter referred to as "the Tohoku-Oki Earthquake"), there had been no earthquake of M5.0 or over. After the occurrence of the Tohoku-Oki Earthquake, the number of earthquakes increased and there have sometimes been earthquakes of M5.0 or over.
For the seismic activity since 1919, in the region around the recent event (Area c), even before the Tohoku-Oki Earthquake, there had sometimes been earthquakes of M7.0 or over. Of these, on June 12, 1978 there occurred "the 1978 Miyagiken-Oki Earthquake" (M7.4, maximum seismic intensity 5) which tsunami with a height of 120 cm (peak to trough amplitude) at Kesennuma Fishing Port. This earthquake caused damage with 28 fatalities, 1,325 injured persons, 1,183 totally collapsed houses, 5,574 seriously damaged houses and so on (Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan).
