The 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake

* Except for the recent event (M6.7), earthquakes after September 5 are not checked in detail. Small earthquakes occurring on September 6 may be lost in the list.

On September 6, 2018 at 03:07 (JST), there was an M6.7 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 7) at a depth of 37 km in the central and eastern Iburi regions, Hokkaido. The focal mechanism showed a reverse fault type with a compression axis in an ENE-WSW direction. This event occurred within the crust. The reported damage caused is 2 fatalities, 1 cardiopulmonary arrest, 3 heavily injured persons, 35 missing persons, 29 collapsed houses by mudslides and so on (as of September 6 at 13:30 (JST), Fire and Disaster Management Agency). In the area around the recent event there exists the Ishikari-teichi-toen fault zone.
For the seismic activity since October 1997, in the vicinity of the recent event (Area b), there have sometimes been earthquakes of about M4.0 or over. On July 1, 2017, there was an M5.1 earthquake (maximum seismic intensity 5 Lower) at the place about 15 km apart in the northwest direction from the recent event.
For the seismic activity since January 1923, in the area around the recent event (Area c), there have often been earthquakes of M5.0 or over, but this is the first time of an earthquake of M6.0 over. Also at the place about 80 km apart in the southeast direction from the recent event, there was "the 1982 Urakawa Earthquake," which caused damage with 167 injured persons and so on (Materials for Comprehensive List of Destructive Earthquakes in Japan).
